Regional Grain Trade Summit to Be Held in Nairobi
RATES, along with COMESA and its other key
implementing partners, will collaborate to organize a regional grain
trade summit to be held in Nairobi, Kenya on 11-13 October, 2005. Key
grain trade players will be invited to participate in the summit with
the objective of opening up discussions leading to concrete action
steps for moving the grain trade forward in the region. It is hoped
that having an action plan will lead to further harmonization of the
regional grain trade and eventually contribute to a focus being placed
on the commercialization of the trade. In addition to the key private
sector players, other non-traditional players will be invited to
participate in this summit. These players include Strategic Grain
Reserves and Marketing Boards, Food AID agencies, emerging commodity
exchanges and warehouse receipt programs and finance and other allied
industries that are required to fully commercialize the grain trade.
Summit delegates will be asked to look at and analyze a number of case
studies of programs that have been successful in promoting commercial
grain trade and in supporting local production and warehousing of
grain in certified warehouses, the first step in establishing a
"futures" market for grain. Please contact Susan Kimani (skimani@ratescenter.org)
of RATES for more information on this summit.
