First Outcry Coffee Auction Held
EAFCA, in conjunction with the Ethiopian coffee industry and with
support from the USAID Ethiopia trade expansion support activity
and RATES, held the first ever limited edition coffee auction during
the recent EAFCA coffee conference held in Addis. This pilot event,
aimed at highlighting some of the best Ethiopian and regional coffees,
drew an enthusiastic crowd as coffees were auctioned to a group
of buyers present at the conference and who had an opportunity
to cup these coffees prior to the event. Several lots of coffee
drew particular attention from the buyers. A sun dried Ethiopian
Yirgacheffe coffee from Moplaco Trading Company attracted $4.50
a pound with the winning coffee, a natural Biloya special, selling
at $5.00 a pound. Phyllis Johnson of BD Imports, Inc. was the largest
single buyer at the auction. EAFCA gained significant experience
from this effort and producers realized that coffees of really
special quality can attract premium prices.
