Starbucks to Double African Coffee Purchases
During their keynote speech at the conference, Starbucks announced
a six point plan to double its purchases of African coffees over
the next two years. Starbucks currently buys 300 million pounds
of coffee with 6% coming from Africa. This will increase purchases
to 36 million pounds. The Seattle-based company will also establish
a help center in 2007 at a location in East Africa to counsel farmers
on how to grow high quality coffee. They also announced another
million dollars dedicated exclusively for East Africa. The company
has already issued micro loans worth $9.5 million. to farmers through
non-governmental organizations.
